When I started Globalevangelists.com, I originally had the site listed on a different domain name, Just recently I decided to shut down the original site, but because I could see in my statistics that I was still getting traffic to the old site, I thought I would redirect the domain name so I wouldn’t loose any of that traffic.
There are a couple of ways I could of tackled this, one way was to manually add a 301 redirect in a .htaccess file and another way was to do a permanent 301 redirect in my Cpanel, I chose the later.
In this tutorial I want to show you how I easily redirected my old domain name within my web hosts Cpanel.
The first step was to log into my Cpanel.
After logging in, I had to find the icon under the Domains section titled Redirects. Click on it to continue.

Because I will no longer be using this site and I have since deleted it from my server, I want to make my redirect permanent, so in the dropdown menu I chose the Permanent (301) option.

Now I need to choose the domain name I want to redirect, (this domain name must be hosted on your server.)

In the next step I have to add the new URL, I usually open a new window or tab in my browser and go to the website I want my old domain name redirected to, I then copy the entire URL from the browsers address bar and come back to my Cpanel to paste it into the redirect page.

- Add the new URL including the http://
- Choose the redirect option, with or without www.(I left this as default as you can see in the image above.)
- Click on the Add button to finish.
After completing the steps above you can see that I now have the old domain name pointing to my new website.

and Just one last check to make sure everyting is working correctly, I’ll go to a new browser window and type into the address bar the old URL, hit enter on my keyboard, and if everything is working correctly I should see my new website open up in the browser.
Hi Jeremy,
I am Yohan from Sri Lanka, an Assitant Pastor ministering under Assemblies of God. I run my own Christian resource blog with WordPress and got it to use www prefix in its URL and wanted to know how to add a 301 redirect so that search engines will be more comfortable.
Your post was very help full. I tested the redirection and it works perfect. Thanks. I will add your blog to my links page soon. Heading to join your Facebook fan page right now…
Hi Yohan,
Thanks for your comment, I am so glad I could provide some help.
May your ministry in Sri Lanka be prosperous and a blessing to many.
Praise the Lord
OK, this was a helpful post. I’m not the most technical person…so I’m just trying to figure out one more thing. You said I have to have the old site hosted on my server. ….so here’s my question.
I have a current site http://www.pathwaystolearning.info that is hosted on an old host that I no longer want to use. I have created a new wordpress site called http://www.pathwaystolearningsuccess.com that I want the old address redirected to. I don’t want to pay the old host anymore…actually really only want to host one site but make sure if someone enters the old address they will get to my new one. Is that possible??
I know this is a simple question for those who understand the structure of hosting, etc…..that’s not me…YET!!! Learning tons everyday and having fun.
I came across with this site because I am having problems with my site (http://opinyoneyted.com) specifically Google PR and Alexa Rank issues. My site has different results with or without www. So I was advised to redirect 301 my http://opinyoneyted.com to http://www.opinyoneyted.com
And yes I tried to follow the instructions above, however after I added redirect 301 to my site without www with www, I noticed there is no green check below “match www”. I don’t know what’s the reason behind.
So what I did next is to open my site, and I feel disappointed I cannot open it anymore, so I removed the redirect 301 in my CPanel. At this point, I just want to ask if what’s wrong why there is not check below match http://www.?
Thank you and God Bless
